In today’s low-engagement workplace, which style works better?

In today’s low-engagement workplace, which style works better?

My answer:
Use both, but emphasize transformational leadership.

Why?

Because disengagement is rarely solved by:

  • more reminders

  • more spreadsheets

  • more surveillance

  • more “per my last email”

People need:

  • purpose

  • trust

  • growth

  • voice

  • recognition

  • connection

That is where transformational leadership carries more weight.

But do not throw out transactional leadership.

Teams still need:

  • expectations

  • accountability

  • consistency

  • follow-through

So the balance looks like this:

Transformational leadership sets the climate. Transactional leadership sets the rails.

Ted Lasso heart.
A little Roy Kent honesty.
Much less Office Space soul drain.

Reflect:
What does your team need more right now? More control or more connection?

Call to action:
Save this post if you are trying to build engagement, not just attendance.

If these leadership styles—Transactional vs. Transformational— are independent, what would the blended “third way” be called?
