If these leadership styles—Transactional vs. Transformational— are independent, what would the blended “third way” be called?

I’d call it Integrative Leadership.

Because the strongest leaders do not choose between:

• people and performance

• vision and structure

• collaboration and accountability

They integrate them.

Integrative Leadership says:


• I will inspire you and hold a standard.

• I will collaborate with you and refine it together as we go.

• I will care about your development and expect follow-through.

• I will build trust and make sure the work gets done.

• I’ll provide support where you need and provide challenge where you need.

That is not soft leadership.
That is mature leadership.
